Pony Express

Wednesday, July 31, 2019

Mail delivery will be approximately 5:30pm - 6:00pm

at the Berrysburg & Community Fire Co. Firehouse

A Pony Express mail delivery consisting of 15-20 riders will begin at the U.S. Post Office on Crooked Hill Road, Harrisburg.  A mail bag containing pony express letters will be given to the first rider and each rider will then ride a 2 mile stretch to Berrysburg.  The Berrysburg & Community Fire Company will escort the riders along the route.  All riders will gather outside of town at one location and, as a group, deliver the mail bag to the Firehouse.

A Berrysburg Post Office representative will be at the Firehouse and will handstamp each envelope and distribute envelopes individually to residents who are in attendance.  For those residents not in attendance, the envelopes will be placed in their mail box or forwarded to them thru their respective post offices.  We will see that everyone receives their envelope.

Pony Express Envelopes are available from the Berrysburg Postmaster or from one of the Bicentennial Committee officers:  Jeff Hassinger (717-579-6965); Marlin/Wendy Warner (717-877-1636); Herb Mauser (717-439-1920); Ashley Snyder (717-991-1689).  We have a good supply of envelopes but please only take what you will use to ensure everyone gets an envelope.  There is no cost for the envelope and you simply provide the postage stamp.  You write a note or letter to yourself, your spouse, family member or friend; and address the envelope along with a postage stamp.  Please return the envelope to one of the officers or to the Berrysburg Postmaster directly.   Do not mail your envelope; otherwise it will not get delivered with the pony express.  You may also give your envelope to them at the community church service at St. John’s Lutheran Church on Sunday, July 28th All envelopes must be returned by Sunday, July 28th.

These will make a great keepsake many years from now.  Some folks have already told us they are writing letters to themselves about our Bicentennial Celebration; some who know one of the riders are writing a letter stating their friend/family member is helping to deliver their letter in the pony express; and some have told us they are writing letters to their children or grandchildren.

The Bicentennial Committee is excited to re-create the Pony Express mail delivery for the 200th Anniversary Celebration of Berrysburg and Mifflin Township.  We hope you’ll not only send a piece of Pony Express mail but also join us at the Firehouse for the mail delivery.  And then ~~ please stay and enjoy an evening at the Carnival with some delicious food, games, rides and music.
